Hi! I’m Niels Korteling!

… and I’m a multi disciplinary designer in the broadest sense of the word. As a designer you shape ideas, images and objects both in the virtual as in the real world. I believe that learning about every aspect of that world makes you a better designer. And that learning new skills and tools helps you translate your ideas to the world. Whenever I start something I dig deep and use the right tools to hit gold.

I got my Master’s Degree in Industrial Design Engineering at the University of Twente, but to be honest I learned more outside of class than inside. Illustration, 3D visualization, branding and identity… you name it. All kinds of creative skills to complement the number crunching logic that we were taught during class.

They say that anything that is worth doing, is worth doing well. And I take that to the heart, if I take on a project you can bet anything on it that I will know all the details about that topic in no time at all. I love learning new skills or information. Being widely interested in just about everything would make you think it is difficult to do everything, but the thing is…. the more you know, the easier everything else becomes. Which every new skills I add, the next skill becomes easier to learn. Light and color theory from illustration for instance is a huge asset when lighting a product for a 3D render. Knowing how to bring out forms and make sure certain parts make an impact are essential in each discipline.

That’s why I believe in constantly developing myself in any way possible. The skillset of an illustrator is useful in the designing of a technical product. Knowing how product design works helps immensely in setting up the branding and identity of a product.

In fact, due to having a broad scope of interests and skills, I have a birds eye view of many elements, disciplines and markets. With a quick mind I can identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats on the fly. While still retaining a free and creative mind running at miles a minute coming up with new ideas. So many ideas that by the time you hear of one of them, I already scrapped 9 others.
